Through
a series of interactive exercises that parcel proper
briefing skills into their numerous elements, participants
secure the skill base to speak before groups of any size
with poise and confidence they might never have thought
possible.
Unlike
Presentation Skills training, Briefing Skills training
concentrates on delivery skills specifically attuned to
delivering a series of facts, situational awareness, safety,
or operational information critical to performing a mission,
civilian or military.
Audience
comprehension soars as briefers learn to deliver content
with techniques that both inspire and guarantee retention.
|

|
Course
content is divided into modules that thoroughly cover Delivery,
Presentation Content,
Presentation
Design,
Handling Questions
and Answers,
and finally the proper use of Humor.
DELIVERY:
First,
we discuss the most common human fear, speaking before a
group, and the nervousness and anxiety that fear creates.
Participants discover for themselves that counterproductive
outcomes – feelings of discomfort
and audience alienation, derive from common
counterproductive behaviors.
EYE CONTACT: When a presenter has the tools to feel
confident, audiences feel more comfortable, and the
atmosphere becomes more conducive to persuasion in the
process. Participants learn to use proper eye contact,
which is the basis upon which all subsequent skills and
knowledge are based. Engaging
the Lock, Talk & Pause method, participants
discover for themselves the benefits of delivering one
complete thought at a time to one (and only one) person at a
time.
UNI-TASKING:
Most presenters encounter difficulties by attempting to
accomplish too many tasks at one time. When
speakers try to think ahead in order to ensure that they
won’t find themselves with nothing to say, they severely
divide their cognitive abilities; this results in lower
quality output.
THE
POWER OF THE PAUSE:
When speakers deliver a constant,
never ending word-stream to the audience, and do not allow
listeners any “time off”, audiences tune out and the
message, no matter how important, is lost. Participants
learn that to successfully accomplish real knowledge
transfer in a briefing, they must allow audience
members ample break between thoughts.
In this way, listeners can process and digest what
was just heard before having to process the next thought.
By
viewing videos of historically great speakers who maximize
the power of the pause, and through clever exercises
that force participants to pause while speaking,
participants come to fully understand how pausing –not
speaking – is the essence of effective delivery.
PASSION:
Finally, by using the more physical aspects of the delivery
process – voice, inflection, body language and gestures,
participants discover how to display the passion they must
feel for their briefing topics to capture and hold audience
attention. Exercises
that combine words and actions stretch participants’
potential to get physically involved in the briefing
process, and add the final skill-set to their becoming
delivery experts.
CONTENT:
The
bottom line is that listeners don't care what you do.
They care about what you can do for them. Participants
learn to talk in terms of results, feelings, benefits,
outcomes, and ideas. They learn to imagine the
audience with signs on their foreheads that read:
"What's in it for me?“
PRESENTATION
DESIGN: Unfortunately,
software alone cannot make a good presentation. In
fact, quite the opposite is true!
Participants learn that there are strict rules to follow, and innumerable pitfalls that can sap the strength of even
superb speakers, ruining an otherwise well-delivered show. It soon becomes self-evident that many who struggle with public speaking are simply trying to deliver the "wrong" presentation!
To demonstrate the relationship between good design and good delivery, instructors deliver Before & After
versions of briefing slides that participants have emailed to our main office prior to training day.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS:
Sometimes the prepared briefing is only a prelude to the real program, i.e., the Q & A session. To enhance
relevancy of this module, participants prepare & trade questions that they would actually encounter in their real
briefing environment. Emphasis is on defusing tough or unfair questions, so that both the briefer and the
organization are always placed in the best light.
HUMOR:
Although humor can enhance audience participation and
retention, improper use of humor can trip up even the most seasoned presenters.
In this module, participants will come away knowing when - and when not - to use humor in a presentation, what type of humor to use, and what to
avoid.
|
|
|
|
Upon
completing this course participants will own the skills to:
|
-
Stand and deliver before any
size group with confidence and composure
-
Use eye contact to eliminate speaker anxiety while building
strong audience rapport
-
Feel confident in using gestures and body language for maximum
effect
-
Develop and organize a presentation that the audience will
actually listen to and act upon
-
Understand the relationship between proper delivery and proper
presentation design
-
Focus their thoughts while speaking to maximize cognitive
abilities
-
Handle tough questions in a non-confrontational way
-
Use humor effectively
|
|
|
Participant Requirements:
There are no pre-requisites. Our "benchmarking"
technique allows participants to capitalize on their best
traits and re-direct old habits for positive results. Regardless
of abilities, all learn specific techniques
necessary to drive their message home and make their next
briefing a productive experience for all.

Forget
everything you’ve heard from your public speaking education
about eye-contact, body language, and voice - it’s likely
either old-school, or just plain wrong. Now, in one very
entertaining, interactive class, you will see and hear for
yourself what has been imprisoning the excellent presenter inside you,
and how you can finally break free of the common chains that
have limited the advancement abilities of so many briefers and
presenters for generations.
Participants come away from this
class knowing exactly why each of the behaviors they
employ when speaking causes a
specific physiological result, and how by modifying those
behaviors, they can change the way their bodies and minds
respond. We don't use pep talks. We don't tell you
to 'imagine' that you're feeling something that you're
not. You will learn that although you can't change the way
your body responds to certain stimuli, you can certainly change
the behaviors that create and magnify the stimuli in the first
place.
