Comprehensive Course Description (cont'd)

Economy of Language:

Many salespeople talk to much, and many business communicators use too many words.  Participants learn to get their points across using direct, action-based phrasing, saving readers time and effort.  They learn to avoid the passive voice and clearly link subjects to verbs and verbs to objects.

Editing:

Good writing requires good editing.  A goal of this workshop, therefore, is to help participants become more thorough, proficient, and systematic editors.  Topics include organization, tone, word choice, grammar, and mechanics.  Participants receive a checklist of issues to consider at each stage of the editing process and practice applying key concepts through a series of editing exercises.

Content:

The Business Writing Skills course also teaches students how to write letters, e-mails, memos, and reports that people understand and take seriously.  The course is designed to help students feel that they can write an e-mail tomorrow morning confident that it will be understood and generate the desired response.

After completing this course, the participants will understand the importance of:

  •  Deciding what they want from readers and expecting to get it
  •  Knowing the people for whom they are writing
  •  Choosing the information that will have the impact they want
  •  Arranging the ideas so readers can follow them
  •  Motivating readers to look forward to every point they make
  •  Writing so their readers cannot possibly misunderstand
  •  Using strategies for special reader needs
  •  Telling their story so readers stay with them all the way
  •  Using words and sentences that readers understand easily
  •  Conveying their message in as few words as possible
  •  Formatting their writing so it is clear and looks interesting
  •  Proofreading their writing

Teaching Methodology:
There are no pre-requisites.  Our "benchmarking" technique allows participants to capitalize on their best traits and re-direct old habits for positive results.   Regardless of abilities, all learn the specific techniques necessary to drive their message home and convey a favorable impression of their firm.

The skills to becoming a persuasive and effective business writer are broken down into modules that can be easily absorbed at each step.   Participants practice thoroughly each module before moving on to the next.  With each subsequent module, participants must also incorporate the skills learned in each preceding one.  Going forward beyond the classroom, participants are given

tools to practice the skills during their regular business day.
